Ruby Leaving Texas begins in the heyday of the 1980s in the Lower East Side of New York City, where graffiti artist Whiteboy meets the perfect woman and marries her. In Ruby's never-ending quest for calm, the couple moves to her small hometown in rural north Texas and then out into the desert of New Mexico, where Ruby breaks down and runs off with a boyfriend from 20 years before. The story takes place in the mind of Whiteboy as he drives back to Texas in an attempt to find Ruby, and, perhaps, to kill her. As the story progresses, the listener learns more about the sad and elusive Ruby, and sees the insanity that has slowly taken over the perspective of the protagonist. Ruby Leaving Texas takes you to the moment where the past and future meet - the split second where sanity and insanity collide. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Dale Lotreck. In small-town suburbia, three young men are ready to make their mark. Solomon is all charisma, authority and charm, down for the moment but surely not out. His half brother, Jimmy, bounces along in his wake, underestimated, waiting for his chance to announce himself. Aleks, their childhood friend, loves his mates, his family and his homeland and would do anything for them. The question is, does he know where to draw the line? Solomon, Jimmy and Aleks: way out on the fringe of Australia, looking for a way in. Hip-hop and graffiti give them a voice. Booze, women and violence pass the time while they wait for their chance. Under the oppressive summer sun, their town has turned tinder dry. All it'll take is a spark. As the surrounding hills roar with flames, the change storms in. But it's not what they were waiting for. It never is. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Omar Musa. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/026100/bk_adbl_026100_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
What does a hungry, pregnant witch do when her whole freaking town goes on a no-carb diet? I'll tell you what. She goes on the sly and conjures up some anchovy-chocolate chunk cookies dipped in hot sauce - that's what. Of course my cheating gets complicated when all of the magic in the world goes on the fritz. To solve that particular wrinkle, I'll have to finally find the source of the lurking evil. Easier said than done. Maybe if I wasn't pregnant and starving, I could deal with the nasty old witch who resides in a gingerbread house. Add in carb-eating fairies who speak French and three rotund familiars who enjoy defacing property with profane graffiti and what you get is almost more trouble than I can handle in my baby-baking condition. I'm still not convinced I won't be giving birth to puppies since the smokin' hot father of my babies is a werewolf, and no one has given me any concrete proof to the contrary. Getting knocked up by the werewolf of my dreams was all kinds of awesome in practice, but the reality of becoming a mother scares me more than Baba Yaga's horrendous 1980's wardrobe. Monstrous decisions with enormous ramifications are best handled with meticulous planning or - in my case - after eating a giant mustard slathered jelly doughnut. Neither of those options is possible at the moment, but since there is no way I'm bringing my children into a magicless world, winging it will just have to work. Wait...was that a contraction I just felt? Goddess help us all. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Stephanie Riggio. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/074005/bk_acx0_074005_sample.mp3. February 14, 2005, a day to remember for the Lebanese. Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was assassinated in a car explosion in Beirut (Lebanon). Along with mass demonstrations and other reactions of the people was yet another unique way to protest, this being to write graffiti on the walls of Martyrs Square in Beirut. A collection of 455 photographs of graffiti were taken between February 24, 2005 and May 29, 2005. The work analyses and presents an interpretation of the peoples communication of worries, desires, political interests, frustrations, and taboos through the study of graffiti at a particular time of history and selected place applying social-cultural research and dialogic approach. Twenty months later a website was developed offering a forum for graffiti makers to express their opinions on a virtual wall emulating the walls in Martyrs Square. Is the place, the writer, and time as important as the graffiti itself? Graffiti s engaging energy allows designers, artists, and researchers in the visual communication field to glimpse masses social and cultural reactions at their most explosively creative moment.
